Steekr is a very basic online storage service that probably does just about enough to pass as a decent enough service to use at home, but business users will probably want to look elsewhere. Subscriptions are reasonably cheap and there's even a free account on offer, but we do feel there are other services out there that offer more features for roughly the same price. Steekr isn't going to win any awards from us any time soon, but it does a reasonable enough job of providing an easy to use online storage space.
Starting on a positive note, Steekr's web site is well designed and modern looking. However, it could do with offering up some more information on the service itself and perhaps some guides on how to use it. The sign up process is very simple and shouldn't take much more than a couple of minutes, especially if you opt for the great value free option which provides 1 GB of storage space to play with. 1 GB should be plenty for anyone who just wants an easy way of sharing a few files with friends or family.
Once you have signed up for a Steekr account you can upload files either using the Java based web interface or the desktop client application which is available for Windows or Mac. We would recommend the client application as the web interface seemed to be quite sluggish in our tests. However, both are easy to use so you should be able to upload files in no time at all. Once there are some files in your account you can access them from anywhere you like using the same methods, but particularly useful is the ability to stream music or videos directly from your Steekr account through your web browser.
If you want to share any of the files you have uploaded to your Steekr account one click will send out a download link, which can be used to access the file, to any email address. This makes it a useful alternative to emailing large files to people. If you specify one of your folders as public, people can also upload files to your account making Steekr quite useful in a collaborative environment. While these features are great, we do feel more could be done to improve upon the fairly basic service.
Steekr is a well and truly average service in our opinion and seems to have fallen short of its claim to provide a new feature every week. It doesn't do anything wrong, but seems to be getting left behind while its competitors offer more space and more features at a rate of knots. While the prices are quite reasonable we would suggest checking our top ten to see if you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere.
