Send6 bills itself as an alternative to email for sending large files over the web. Despite all the advances in web technology over recent years it's surprising that this still causes quite a headache for many people. Email systems usually aren't set up to cope with large attachments and can be painfully slow even if they allow them. Send6 does a good job of providing a reliable and traceable service that takes the pain out of getting large files to where they are supposed to go.
Send6 offers a range of different plans which include features to fulfil any set of requirements. If you just want to try the service or only have a couple of files to send per month there is even a free option available, which provides most of the functionality of the paid for service, but with lower file size and bandwidth limits. At the other end of the scale is the corporate package which, although quite expensive, offers unlimited sends and bandwidth and provides you with a custom domain and branded web interface.
It's possible to access the Send6 service directly through your web browser and if you opt for the free service you can be sending files within a matter of minutes. However, you will probably get the most from it if you download the 'Air' desktop application. This lets you upload files for sending directly from your desktop and manage folders on your account all through a fast and easy to use interface. We were happy to see it's compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux too so there shouldn't be any problems getting it to run.
One of the most useful features Send6 offers over and above traditional email is the ability to track the delivery of your files. If you send someone a file you can easily check whether they have downloaded it, which can be important when working with difficult clients! By designating a folder as public you can also allow anyone outside of Send6 to upload files to your account, which is very handy if they have a large file to return to you.
Send6 is a useful method of sending large files over the web, but it's not the only service that lets you do this. Most online storage services offer similar functionality, if not quite so neatly wrapped up and targeted. Send6 is definitely worth consideration, but as always we recommend checking out our top ten for some of the best value deals in online storage around.
