Editor's Review:
EsnipsĀ is more of a social networking website than a fully fledged online storage service, but it fits into this category because it offers 5 GB of free storage space and lots of features to make sharing files easy. The service is really aimed at home users who want a quick and easy way to share the digital content they create. There is also a big emphasis on collaboration and meeting people with similar interests based on the content you upload.
Esnips provides a forum for anyone to share their files online. The website is geared towards getting creative types to upload their work and collaborate with like-minded individuals. However, since you can upload your files through a web browser and get access to them from anywhere, it can still be used as a private online storage facility. You don't have to use the social networking features - like tagging, profile creation and buddy lists - but you will get the most out of the service if you do. You can create a folder structure though, and decide who gets to see what so you are in control of your files at all times.
The main way to access Esnips is through a web browser. The web interface provided has had a lot of work put into it and runs very quickly and smoothly, but we did find a number of links that weren't working correctly. If you are familiar with sites like Facebook or Myspace it should be no problem to use, and makes uploading your files as simple as possible. You can upload any types of file you like, such as photos, music or videos, and can even publish Flash files if you are a budding Flash developer. If you have a lot of files to upload it can be useful to download the small tool provided for uploading files from your desktop. This only runs on windows, but does make it slightly easier to upload whole folders.
Esnips is a handy service if you want a quick and free way of sharing a variety of media with your family and friends. However, there are plenty of other sites that allow you to do this, and many do it better than Ensnips. The social networking features are probably the deal clincher if you are thinking about using the service and it looks like it could be very useful for making creative contacts. However, if you are looking for a straightforward online storage solution we recommended checking out some of the excellent products in our top ten.
