Steekr is a fairly well designed, if strangely named, online storage and backup provider. It caters mainly for home users and doesn't offer the support or functionality that business users would require. However, with simple pricing plans and even a free account option, home users should find everything they need in an online storage service.
The whole Steekr website is really geared towards trying to convince home users that they need an online storage space to share photos and videos. While this is fine, serious business users or professionals will probably prefer a more professional-oriented service. However, Steekr does offer a decent range of features for easily sharing files and even goes as far as to offer automatic backups if you use their desktop client.
The desktop clients are available for Mac and Windows and make it easy to access your online space and backup your files. Notice we said clients plural though. For some reason Steekr has thought it necessary to split the functionality it offers into two separate pieces of software which apparently are "complementary". Even more confusingly they have named one as Steekr Drive and the other as Steekr DriveDrive (Yes you did read that correctly!). At first we were baffled, but as far as we can work out one version is more Mac oriented - although is still available for Windows...actually we are still baffled.
There is no mention of the security features used on the Steekr website, but we can confirm SSL encryption is used on file transfers through the web interface at least. Being aimed at home users we doubt your files will be encrypted on the Steekr servers. The plans on offer only vary in the amount of space you get to store your files. The prices are all pretty reasonable, but you have to pay yearly - there are no monthly options. However, we reckon most people will just go for the free 1Gb account which should be plenty for sharing a few photos.
In all Steekr is a reasonably good service. We would like it if they revised their software a little and clarified on their web site exactly how the service works, but other than that we have no complaints. If you are a home user looking for a simple to use online storage space then you could do worse than to consider Steekr.
