Editor's Verdict:

Openomy is a basic online storage service providing a small amount of free space to anyone who wants it. It prides itself on being open to new developers and as such offers a developers API so that tech savvy users can use the service in any way they want to. However, it still caters for novice users with its simple, but useable web interface.

Openomy is mainly aimed at home users who don't need much storage and don't want to pay for it. The service is limited in its features, but if all you need is some basic online storage then you can't go far wrong. There is also the option to share files with friends and embed links to files in your blogs or web pages.

You can only access the Openomy service through the browser based interface. This means you can't do automatic backups or interact with your space like you would a normal hard drive, but it gives you access to your files from wherever you are. If you are a more technical user though, Openomy offers a library of programming functions so that you can write your own applications which take advantage of the service.

Openomy does not host any files itself, instead making use of Amazon's S3 cloud storage service, which means it doesn't offer any security features itself above the standard SSL encryption on file transfers. However, being a big name, Amazon puts a lot of effort into the security of its systems so your files should be relatively safe. This probably isn't the type of service you would use to store sensitive documents, but is fine for everyday use.

As we have mentioned already, the Openomy service is free - which always scores extra points in our eyes. You only get 1Gb of storage, but that should be plenty for sharing a few photo or video files. There don't seem to be any plans to charge for the service or provide accounts with more storage in the near future.

Openomy is a decent enough service and has the added benefit of being completely free. There are not a great number of features, but everything is in place to allow you to upload and share your files pretty easily. If you are just looking for a simple and basic online storage provider you won't go far wrong with Openomy.
