My Docs Online is a below average online storage and backup service. Its web site is confusing and makes it difficult to understand exactly what you are getting for your money or how the service works. The software provided looks worn and outdated and the web interface isn't much better. Although the service does seem to work we think there are better options available.
>From the moment you arrive at the my docs online home page you can see it just doesn't give the impression of being a professional company. The content is badly written, the graphics look dated, the layout is inconsistent and the structure is confusing. Strangely enough the service does seem to do the job though as the company seems to have at least a few customers. Also the feature seems to be quite comprehensive - if not very well described.
My docs online provides a web interface and two applications which serve to upload and download files to and from your online space. Quite why they didn't think it sensible to combine both the upload and download applications into one simple package is anyone's guess. All three interfaces look very dated but at least seem to work. My docs online also makes much of the fact that their service works on Blackberries, but most web based interfaces will do this anyway.
As far as security goes we can tell you that My docs online uses 128-bit SSL encryption on uploads, but that's about it. The disclaimer on their site says that they are not prepared to discuss any other software or hardware security mechanisms they use. This seems very strange given that most companies find the best way to secure their systems is to be open and honest about the mechanisms they use.
The different types of plans on offer vary in the features they offer so you should check what you are getting before signing up. The prices on the plans also seem pretty expensive for what would seem like an outdated service.
In all we would recommend a whole host of other services before My docs online. Although it does seem to just about work, we think you would be better off spending your money on a more modern and up-to-date service which is open and honest about the way it does business. If you do insist on signing up at least read the small print thoroughly to make sure exactly what you are paying for.
