Humyo is a versatile and reliable online storage and backup solution suitable for both business and home users. Their varied price plans mean you can pay for exactly what you need and there is even a free option for casual users. The service itself is very easy to use and provides a whole host of useful features that business and home users alike will find useful.
Humyo essentially provides two different services aimed at home and single users or business users. The feature set included in your subscription depends on which type of account you sign up for, but the web site provides a handy checklist so that you can make sure exactly what you are getting. Both sides of the service benefit from well designed and maintained client software as well as an excellent web front end for accessing your files. Business users get the extra functionality of multiple user accounts and collaborative work folders. These are essentially shared folders where different users can work together on documents controlled by the Humyo versioning system. Both the personal and business service allows folders to be synchronized between multiple computers or users.
To get the most out of Humyo you must download and install their small desktop client application. Currently it is only available for Windows but should be available for Linux and Mac OS very soon. This gives you access to all the automatic backup and synchronization functionality of the service. Novice users will appreciate the ease of use of the software which makes your online storage space appear just like a normal drive in Windows. The application has different settings so that you are in control of how the automatic backup works. Most people will set it to run in the background and update as you work, which doesn't have too much of an effect on your computer or network's speed.
Humyo can also be accessed through the web based interface which allows you to drag and drop files to the web page the same as you would in Windows Explorer. Although this interface looks good and is designed well, there are some features that can make it slightly annoying to work with after a long period. One of these is the fact that you can't choose how many files to see on the page at once - something very simple but details like this can make a vast difference to the usability of an application.
Humyo's security features are not quite as good as some other services we have reviewed but are still good enough to keep your data very secure. The choice to have 256-bit SSL encryption instead of the standard 128-bit seems like a bit of overkill, but certainly will be a welcome addition for anyone with sensitive data to store. The aspect lacking is that files are not stored in encrypted format on the Humyo servers like they are on some other providers.
Humyo has a variety of pricing options depending on whether you want the service for business or personal use. Prices are good value; perhaps not the best we have seen, but you do get unlimited download access to your files and as much storage space as you are willing to pay for. Also the security of knowing that Humyo's servers are located in a former Bank of England bullion vault! Best value for casual users is the free account which is supported by adverts built into the software. This gives you a huge 10Gb of space and is one of the best free accounts we have seen.
Humyo is a very good online storage and backup service. The only thing we would criticise is that the cost is slightly higher than similar services and the usability could do with a little work. However, you still get value for money and a very useful service. You might want to shop around a bit, but if you do decide on Humyo we are sure you won't be disappointed.
