Esnips is more of a social networking website than a fully fledged online storage service, but it fits into this category because it offers 5Gb of free storage space and lots of features to make sharing files easy. The service is really aimed at home users and creative types who want to get their work seen by people around the world. There are a couple of interesting features that set this apart from other social networking sites though.
Esnips provides a forum for anyone to share their files online. The website seems to be geared towards getting musicians, artists and writers to upload their work and let others see it. However, since you can upload your files through a web browser and get access to them from anywhere, it can still be used as a private online storage facility. You don't have to use the social networking features - like tagging, profile creation and buddy lists - but you will get the most out of the service if you do. If you choose not to upload files can still be kept private and secure in your account so that only you can access them.
The main way you will be accessing Esnips is through a web browser. The web interface provided has had a lot of work put into it and runs very quickly and smoothly. If you are familiar with sites like Facebook or Myspace it should be no problem to use, and makes uploading your files as simple as possible. One of the most interesting features we thought was that you can turn any folder into an online marketplace to sell your work. At the click of a button you can set prices on anything you upload and then buyers can pay you through Paypal. This is a neat idea and may come in very useful for arty types who need a place to sell their work.
Ensips also provides a downloadable tool to help you upload files to your storage space. It is fairly basic and just allows you to drag and drop files from your desktop to be automatically uploaded. They also provide a toolbar that is compatible with Internet Explorer or Firefox and provides some interesting features like being able to copy web page content directly to your Esnips storage space.
In terms of security, Esnips has very little. Files are stored on a secure server and of course your account is password protected, but there is no encryption either on stored files or on uploads. This is fine for sharing family photos or your musical creations, but you wouldn't want to be uploading any sensitive documents to your space. However Esnips accounts are completely free and not really intended for serious business use so the lack of encryption mechanisms is forgivable.
As we have said Esnips is definitely a social networking tool first and an online storage provider second. If all you want is a fun way of sharing photo, videos etc with your friends then this is fine for you, but business users or people with important files should look at one of the more serious services on offer.
