Driveway is a simple but effective online storage space that allows you to easily share large files over the web. It is a free service so don't expect all the bells and whistles included, but Driveway is solid, reliable and easy for novice users to pick up.
Driveway is clearly aimed at home users who want an easy method of sharing large files with their friends. The attractive design and easy to use interface will appeal to novice computer users who have become sick of their email accounts attachment size limit. The 2Gb limit on accounts and 500Mb file size limit should be more than enough to share videos, music or pictures across the internet.
Driveway provides a desktop uploader for Windows or you can access your account using the web interface. Both interfaces are well designed and make it easy to upload your files. The desktop client integrates with Windows to give you a right click option to instantly share a file using Driveway while the web client allows you to create widgets to embed in your blog or web site. We were particularly impressed that it also allows you to view and edit Microsoft Office documents through your browser using a special plug-in.
Driveway doesn't seem to offer any sort of encryption based security on uploads or during storage. The only thing keeping intruders away from your files is the password protecting your account. This is fine if you are only sharing some family photos or your latest musical creation, but you wouldn't want to store any private documents this way.
Driveway is a fairly new service and is still offering free accounts which provide 2Gb of storage space. There is no way to get any more at the moment, but you are free to sign up for as many accounts as you like. It is likely that in the near future though you will either have to start paying or be forced to watch advertisements as you upload your files.
Driveway is a useful service for anyone who needs a small amount of online storage space to share a few large multimedia files. The embedded widgets feature and ability to view Office documents online are useful additions which not all of these types of services offer. Accounts are still free so there is no reason not to give Driveway a try and see if it's for you.
