Editor's Verdict:

Bullguard is an award winning provider of security and backup software for PCs. It often gains recommendations from major PC magazines such as PC Pro and Web User. Its backup software is expensive but very easy to set up and use for computer novices. Lots of free support options are also included in the deal to make sure you have no problems getting started.

Bullguard's backup service is offered more as a standalone piece of software than an online subscription based service. You still have to pay a yearly licence fee, but the whole thing is set up to be an out-of-the-box application. This will satisfy novice users who aren't too sure how to go about setting up an online backup service and don't want the hassle of configuring settings themselves. More tech savvy users might want to consider looking at some of the cheaper options that they can set up themselves.

To use the service it is best to download the software provided. It is only available for Windows PCs at the moment but that has meant Bullguard has been able to concentrate on making it as easy to set up as possible. The installation process will lead you by the nose through all the settings you need to get the automatic backup process running. After that the program will run in the background and automatically upload changes to your files. To save on bandwidth it does this by only updating the changes and not the whole file each time like some other applications do. The software can also set up a folder on your computer that you can drag and drop files into which you can automatically upload them to your storage space.

Bullguard also provides a web interface so that you can access your files from any computer. This is as easy to use as the software and lets you restore all your important files with just a couple of clicks. Unlike some online storage providers though, there is no facility for sharing files with others or setting up shared folders to collaborate on work.

Bullguard charges quite a lot for its software as it knows novice users will pay the extra for a trusted name. £30.00 will get you the basic version which includes 10Gb of backup space and a one year license to install the application on up to 3 computers. More space and extra licenses can be added during the checkout process and the more you buy the cheaper you get it. Despite the high prices, you do get lots of free support included which is something other services tend to skimp on.

If you are a novice user and don't mind shelling out a bit extra to be sure of an easy to use service and 24/7 support then Bullguard could be for you. However, more experienced users should probably look to one of the cheaper services that provide most of the same functionality, but without so many of the simple set up features.
