Allmydata is a fairly small, but reliable online storage provider. It isn't as fully featured as some of its larger competitors, but does provide a decent enough service for the price. Despite being a smaller company they don't scrimp on security and reliability so can be considered a safe bet for your online storage needs.
Allmydata provides both a desktop client and a web interface for accessing your files. The full release of the desktop client is currently only compatible with Windows, but there is a beta version of a Mac client available. The software is fairly simply to use even if it doesn't offer a wide variety of features to help with your backups. The web interface is similar in that it is reasonably well designed and does the job, but it's nothing special.
One thing that helps Allmydata to stand out from the crowd slightly is that it offers a dedicated iPhone app for backing up your data. This can be downloaded from the iTunes store and installed on your iPhone itself. The software seems to run with no problems and does make it easy to backup any important files you may have on your iPhone. However, if you pick the iPhone subscription plan you are limited to 1Gb of storage space whereas you get unlimited space if you pick the standard plan.
Allmydata handles security pretty well. All files uploaded are transferred using 128-bit SSL encryption and are encrypted again before being stored on the data servers. Reliability is also pretty good as proven techniques, like redundancy, are used to make sure your files are available at all times.
In terms of price, Allmydata isn't too bad either. At $9.99 for unlimited storage and unlimited download bandwidth you are getting a lot of space for your subscription fee but are missing out on other things like phone support and extra features in the software that other companies offer. The iPhone subscription provides all the same features but limits you to 1Gb of storage space - which we think is a bit limiting, but is probably enough for whatever you have on your iPhone.
Allmydata is a very reasonable service for the money. The dedicated iPhone application is not something that is seen very often, but could perhaps be offered at a slightly cheaper price. The standard subscription plan is good value for money, although it does cut back on some of the extras that you might pay more for somewhere else. If all you want is a no-frills online storage space then you won't go far wrong here.
